WWE’s roster is stacked from top to bottom, and even with nearly eight hours of live television every week, it is impossible to feature everyone in a meaningful way all the time. With Raw, SmackDown, and Premium Live Events constantly moving stories forward, some wrestlers are bound to rotate in and out of focus.
According to reports, WWE has quietly changed how it handles talent when creative plans are not fully ready. Instead of placing wrestlers in random or forgettable matches, the company is choosing to pull them off television entirely. The idea is simple: keep them fresh, avoid overexposure, and bring them back when there is a real story to tell.
This approach explains why several familiar names have been missing in recent months.
WWE’s strategy behind keeping talent off TV
Veteran wrestling journalist PWInsider reports that this strategy is intentional. When the creative team does not have something substantial lined up, WWE prefers to rest talent rather than “waste” them in filler matches.
The belief is that absences can actually help build anticipation. When a wrestler returns with a clear direction, fans are more likely to react positively. This has become increasingly important as WWE balances long-term storytelling with an overcrowded roster.

Why Rusev has been off television
One of the more noticeable absences has been Rusev, also known as the Bulgarian Brute. Rusev has not appeared on WWE television since he lost to Jey Uso in the quarterfinals of the “Last Time Is Now” Tournament.
While he did defeat Otis in a match taped for WWE Main Event in December, that bout did little to move his character forward. Since then, Rusev has not wrestled or appeared on weekly programming.
The key takeaway is that Rusev is not injured. His absence is purely creative, and WWE appears to be waiting for the right storyline before reintroducing him.
The Street Profits’ extended absence explained
The tag team of Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins, collectively known as The Street Profits, have been off television even longer.
Their last major appearance came on the October 10 episode of WWE SmackDown, where they failed to regain the WWE Tag Team Championship from the Wyatt Sicks. Like Rusev, they worked a couple of low-profile matches for Main Event before being taken off the road.
Again, there are no injury concerns. WWE simply does not want to overuse them without a strong creative plan. Given their popularity and past success, the belief is that their eventual return will feel bigger because of the time away.
No return date, but no bad news either
As of now, there is no confirmed return date for Rusev or The Street Profits. However, the most important detail is that all three performers are healthy. That means WWE can bring them back at any moment when the timing feels right.
This strategy may frustrate fans in the short term, but it often pays off when wrestlers return with renewed momentum.
Chad Gable expected back very soon
While some stars remain sidelined, Chad Gable appears ready to re-enter the picture. Gable has been out since June after suffering a shoulder injury that required surgery.
Earlier reports suggested he would be back in time for the Royal Rumble, and PWInsider now adds that pitches have been made for Gable to return as soon as this Monday on WWE Raw in Toronto.
Before his injury, Gable was playing a dual role on Raw. He was leading American Made while also secretly portraying the masked luchador El Grande Americano. During his absence, Ludwig Kaiser took over the El Grande Americano persona and aligned with Tyler Bate and Pete Dunne to form Los Americanos.
What Chad Gable’s return could mean
Gable is expected to address the El Grande Americano situation in some form once he returns. Whether that leads to a full program with Kaiser, Bate, and Dunne remains unclear, but it is almost certain that WWE will acknowledge what happened in his absence.
Given Gable’s versatility and strong crowd connection, his return could quickly shake things up on Raw.
