The excitement around the upcoming WWE 2K26 video game just got bigger, as a new special edition was revealed during WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event in Montreal.
After already announcing the nostalgic ‘Attitude Era’ edition, 2K Games has now confirmed a second throwback-themed release—the ‘Monday Night Wars’ Edition—celebrating one of the most intense rivalries in wrestling history: WWE vs WCW.
Raw vs Nitro: A Rivalry Reborn in WWE 2K26
The ‘Monday Night Wars’ were a legendary battle for TV ratings between WWE’s Monday Night Raw and WCW’s Monday Nitro, lasting from 1995 to 2001. Every Monday night, fans would flip between channels to see which brand could outdo the other.
WCW, led by Eric Bischoff and backed by media giant Ted Turner, gave WWE serious competition. With huge names like Hollywood Hogan, Kevin Nash, and Scott Hall forming the New World Order (NWO), WCW even beat WWE in the ratings for 83 straight weeks.
In this new WWE 2K26 edition, fans will get the chance to relive this unforgettable era—or even change the outcome. From arena designs to classic wrestler outfits and legendary factions, this version promises to take players deep into the late ’90s wrestling war.
When WCW Nearly Beat WWE
It may be hard to imagine now, but during 1996–1997, WWE was actually struggling. WCW had managed to lure away big stars like Randy Savage, Bret Hart, Lex Luger, Roddy Piper, and Ted DiBiase. With such a stacked roster, it looked like WCW might knock WWE out of the game completely.
But WWE turned things around—big time. The rise of ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin, the creation of the ‘Mr. McMahon’ character, and the edgy new attitude of WWE programming shifted the momentum. Characters like The Rock, Triple H, Mick Foley, and Sable helped WWE grab the attention of a younger, more rebellious audience.
By 1998, WWE was dominating again, and WCW began to lose steam.
WCW’s Downfall: What Went Wrong
Despite its early success, WCW made some massive mistakes that cost them dearly. They ended Goldberg’s iconic undefeated streak in a storyline now infamously known as the ‘Fingerpoke of Doom’, which fans widely rejected.
They also mishandled Bret Hart’s arrival, wasting the momentum he had after the controversial Montreal Screwjob. On top of that, WCW failed to build up new talent and continued relying on aging stars, while WWE was producing fresh and exciting storylines every week.
Eventually, WCW couldn’t keep up. The company went over two years without winning another Monday night, and in 2001, WWE bought WCW and ended the rivalry for good.
WWE 2K26: A Chance to Rewrite History
The upcoming ‘Monday Night Wars’ edition of WWE 2K26 isn’t just about nostalgia—it’s about what-if moments. What if WCW had played its cards right? What if Goldberg stayed undefeated? What if Bret Hart was booked better?
Players will likely get the chance to explore alternative storylines, recreate classic feuds, and maybe even turn the tide in WCW’s favour—all in the world of gaming.
2K Games hasn’t revealed full details yet, but fans can expect themed arenas, classic wrestler versions, and exclusive game modes that highlight this golden age of wrestling.
Whether you’re Team Raw or Team Nitro, this edition of WWE 2K26 is shaping up to be a must-have for longtime fans and new players alike.
