There was some concern among fans after Rey Mysterio’s match on Monday Night Raw in Toronto, as the legendary WWE Superstar seemed to be hurt during his match with Austin Theory. But thankfully, there’s been a positive update regarding his condition.
What Happened on WWE Raw?
During the match, Mysterio appeared to suffer an injury that had fans and officials worried. He was seen holding his ribs and shoulder, and also seemed to have trouble with his leg. Things got serious when referee Rod Zapata threw up the “X” sign — a signal in wrestling that a wrestler may be injured and needs medical attention.
This also led to Bron Breakker being pulled back from a planned post-match attack that would’ve involved Mysterio, alongside Penta and Dragon Lee. Medical staff quickly rushed to check on the Hall of Famer.
The Latest on Rey Mysterio’s Condition
As of Tuesday, wrestling reporter Dave Meltzer shared some relief: Rey Mysterio is not seriously hurt. While no official statement has been made by WWE yet, it appears the injury isn’t too serious, which is great news for fans hoping to see him in action soon.
However, his status for this Saturday’s Royal Rumble is still unclear. WWE hasn’t confirmed whether Rey will still compete in the event, which is set to take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Rey Mysterio and the 2026 Royal Rumble
Mysterio is one of 15 Superstars already announced for the Men’s Royal Rumble match. He was expected to enter the Rumble alongside allies Penta and Dragon Lee, as well as big names like Cody Rhodes, Roman Reigns, Jey Uso, Gunther, and Solo Sikoa.
If Mysterio isn’t cleared in time, there’s a possibility that Finn Bálor could replace him. On Raw, Bálor was told by GM Adam Pearce that the Rumble lineup was full. That led to Bálor attacking CM Punk and ruining his title defense against AJ Styles — making it clear that he’s desperate to find his way into the match.
Rey’s Recent Return to the Ring
Rey Mysterio only returned to action in November 2025, after spending months on the sidelines due to a torn groin injury. He had suffered that injury just before last year’s WrestleMania and missed out on a high-profile match against El Grande Americano (a character played by Chad Gable at the time). Rey Fenix ended up replacing him at WrestleMania, although he lost the match.
With WrestleMania 42 just around the corner, Rey will surely want to stay healthy and be part of this year’s event. Even if he misses the Royal Rumble, the bigger goal remains the same — getting to WrestleMania and ending his comeback story on a high.
