The Women’s North American Champion is riding high after capturing the title at NXT New Year’s Evil to kick off 2026, and in recent interviews, she’s opened up about her unique path to the top, her goals as champion, and how she’s leaning into character work to stand out in a stacked women’s division.
From Cyprus to the WWE: A Life-Changing Message
Before WWE, Izzi Dame—real name Franki Strefling—was a collegiate volleyball standout at Eastern Michigan and played professionally overseas in Cyprus. But everything changed when she got what she thought was a scam message from WWE while on a summer break.
“I got what I thought was a scam WWE recruit message… because why would the WWE want anything with little old me playing in the middle of the Mediterranean?”
To her surprise, the message was real. WWE flew her out to Nashville, offered her a contract, and she made the difficult decision to break her pro volleyball contract—resulting in a 10-year ban from playing in Cyprus. But as Dame herself said, “We’re doing good over here.”
Why WWE Was the Perfect Fit
In an interview with Fox News Digital, Dame explained how wrestling allowed her to combine everything she loved—athletics, performance, public speaking, and storytelling—all while being closer to her big family in the U.S.
“WWE was just the perfect mix… You’re meant for more. Volleyball displays your athletics but you have so much more to offer.”
Champion With a Vision: Making the Title Matter
Since its creation in 2024, the NXT Women’s North American Championship has changed hands frequently, with Dame becoming the seventh champion in under two years. Previous holders include Kelani Jordan, Fallon Henley, Stephanie Vaquer, Sol Ruca, Blake Monroe, and Thea Hail.
Dame made it clear that her reign won’t be a short one.
“I seriously hope that I can take this title and make it mean something, make my name mean something… I don’t want to say I want an Oba Femi reign, but I’m not opposed to an Oba Femi reign. Give me a little something!”
Breaking the “Blonde Heel” Stereotype
Dame is aware of how easy it is to get grouped into a stereotype in pro wrestling—especially as a blonde woman. But she’s focused on crafting a character with depth, leaning into a manipulative, mastermind-like persona rather than simply relying on in-ring moves.
“We all can have the same hair color… but it’s super important we all differentiate ourselves through our character work.”
She even joked about not trying to hit moonsaults like Tiffany Stratton, instead focusing on “big man stuff” and calculated psychology in the ring.
The Culling & Shawn Spears’ Mentorship
Dame is the standout female face of The Culling, one of NXT’s more intriguing factions led by veteran Shawn Spears. She credits Spears as a major influence during her development.
“He’s helped me, not only in ring, but really put this entire journey into perspective… He really reels everything in and reminds me that I haven’t been in this industry that long and it’s OK to make mistakes.”
Having Spears in her corner has given Dame the confidence to grow not just as a competitor but as a storyteller.
Strategic Champion: “I Now Decide Who Gets a Shot”
Now that the title is hers, Dame is changing the way it’s defended. She threw shade at former champ Tatum Paxley for handing out title opportunities freely, saying that her reign will be more calculated.
“Unfortunately, not everybody is going to get a shot… I decide who, what, where, when, how anyone gets near the title.”
