In a surprising turn of events, longtime New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) star EVIL is officially parting ways with the promotion, with many expecting him to join WWE in the near future. NJPW confirmed his departure in a statement posted over the weekend, ending his run with the company as his contract expires at the end of January 2026.
NJPW Announces EVIL’s Departure
Here’s what NJPW had to say:
“After careful consideration and discussions with NJPW management, EVIL, who has been a long-standing member of the NJPW roster, will leave New Japan Pro-Wrestling at the expiry of his contract at the end of January 2026. We apologize to fans for the sudden nature of this announcement. New Japan Pro-Wrestling wishes EVIL the very best in his future activities.”
The news took many by surprise, especially considering EVIL’s status as a former IWGP Heavyweight Champion and a major figure in the Bullet Club and House of Torture factions.
Is EVIL Heading to WWE?
Shortly after the announcement, respected journalist Dave Meltzer reported on X (formerly Twitter) that EVIL is expected to sign with WWE. This was later backed up by Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select, who revealed that EVIL has already been backstage at multiple WWE events, supporting friends and exploring his options.
According to Sapp, talks between EVIL and WWE are already underway, and sources within NJPW believe he is preparing to relocate to the United States. While Japanese promotions may still be interested in signing him, it appears EVIL is looking westward for his next chapter.
Notably, AEW is not seen as a likely destination, with no current links reported between EVIL and Tony Khan’s promotion.

More Big Names Expected to Join WWE
EVIL is not the only major name rumoured to be joining WWE this year. Several new signings and returns are in the works as WWE looks to refresh its roster heading into WrestleMania season.
Here are some key updates:
- Powerhouse Hobbs, former AEW TNT Champion, has reportedly signed with WWE and will debut under the name Royce Keys.
- Chris Jericho, a nine-time World Champion and former WWE star, is rumoured to be returning after his AEW contract expired at the end of 2025.
- Jericho’s name has been floated for a Royal Rumble surprise appearance, although there’s no confirmed report about his presence in Saudi Arabia this weekend.
WWE’s Royal Rumble Plans Remain Under Wraps
WWE is reportedly working hard to keep Royal Rumble surprises a secret this year. As of now, only 15 of the 30 men’s Royal Rumble participants have been officially announced, leaving room for unexpected returns and debuts.
With AJ Styles potentially retiring if he loses to Gunther, and several roster gaps due to injuries or exits, WWE is clearly preparing for a major reshuffle — and EVIL could be a key part of that strategy.
