Chelsea Green’s WWE momentum has hit an unfortunate pause, as the popular star confirmed she has suffered a broken ankle following last Friday’s SmackDown. After initial optimism that the injury was a minor sprain, Green shared an emotional update on social media, revealing the real severity of the situation — and with it, a likely weeks-long absence from the ring.
This injury comes at a pivotal moment in her career, with growing fan support and rising interest thanks to her presence both in WWE and on WWE: Unreal.
Chelsea Green Confirms Broken Ankle
On Wednesday, Chelsea Green took to social media with a new edition of her signature Chelsea Chronicle, headlined:
“Ankle Breaks; Spirit Prevails.”
The post included an x-ray image of her broken ankle, as well as a short tribute to her grit — referencing how she managed to finish her Elimination Chamber Qualifying Match against Tiffany Stratton and Lash Legend after the injury had occurred.
Her caption didn’t provide a timeline, but based on the type of injury, Green is expected to miss several weeks, potentially longer depending on treatment and rehab.
Injury Fallout: Missed Title Defense & Lost Championship
Green’s injury didn’t just affect her WWE schedule. Over the weekend, she was scheduled to appear at the AAA on Fox event to defend the AAA World Mixed Tag Team Championship alongside Ethan Page against Lola Vice and Mr. Iguana.
Instead, La Hiedra stepped in as Green’s replacement — but unfortunately, the substitute wasn’t enough. After a loss in the match, Chelsea and Ethan Page lost the Mixed Tag Titles, adding more heartbreak to an already difficult weekend for the Canadian star.
The Bad Timing of a Good Run
Injuries are always poorly timed, but this one stings a little more — because Chelsea Green was finally hitting her stride.
- She had recently become a two-time WWE Women’s United States Champion
- Her match performances were drawing bigger reactions, even while playing a heel
- And critically, her appearance in Season 2 of WWE: Unreal on Netflix made waves, both with fans and internally in WWE
In fact, a scene from Unreal in which veteran producer Michael Hayes commented that Green wasn’t “top-of-the-card material” sparked major backlash online. Many fans — and some within WWE — rallied around her, believing the show did her a disservice.
Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select reported:
“Green has experienced a wealth of support from those we’ve spoken to backstage since WWE Unreal dropped.”
That backstage momentum and her crowd reactions on SmackDown seemed to signal a potential career breakthrough.
What’s Next for Chelsea Green?
With WWE’s Elimination Chamber Premium Live Event just around the corner and WrestleMania 42 looming in April, there’s no official word on whether Chelsea Green will be cleared in time to participate in either.
Broken ankles can require anywhere from 4 to 8 weeks (or more) depending on severity and treatment — and given Green’s in-ring style, a cautious recovery will be necessary.
Still, with her character work, social media presence, and crowd support, there’s every chance she could remain visible on TV during recovery in a non-wrestling role — continuing to build her presence and keep fans engaged.
Chelsea Green’s unfortunate injury puts her in an all-too-familiar position — battling adversity. But if there’s one thing she’s shown throughout her career, it’s resilience. As the chants from fans prove, the WWE Universe is behind her now more than ever, and her eventual return may be even bigger because of it.
