The former WWE Champion is currently recovering from an injury suffered during the Casino Gauntlet match at AEW Full Gear in November. Even though he’s sidelined, Lashley says he wouldn’t have done anything differently.
Injury at AEW Full Gear and the Reality of the Risk
The Casino Gauntlet match has gained a reputation in AEW—not just for its high-stakes drama, but also for being physically demanding. Lashley is one of several stars to get hurt in this style of match, and he joins a growing list of performers, including several women at All In: Texas, who’ve suffered injuries during similar matches.
Still, Lashley believes the risk is part of the commitment. He made it clear that injuries in AEW aren’t due to recklessness—they happen because wrestlers are giving everything they’ve got for the fans.
AEW’s Locker Room Mentality: Full Passion, No Ego
Speaking on The Mega Powers Podcast, Lashley opened up about his time in AEW and how it’s unlike anything he’s ever experienced.
“AEW is amazing,” Lashley said. “No one else is doing what these guys are doing. Just look at the energy of the crowd. That’s why fans are showing up—because wrestlers here are putting their lives on the line every night.”
Lashley went on to name talents like Swerve Strickland, Will Ospreay, Kenny Omega, Darby Allin, and Jon Moxley, calling them “superstars” who lead with action, not attitude. According to him, this commitment to performance—no matter the paycheck—is what drives AEW forward.
Adjusting to AEW’s Culture: A New Learning Curve
Despite his years in wrestling with WWE and TNA, Lashley admitted that joining AEW came with a learning curve.
“In other places, it’s about who you are. Here, it’s about what you’re doing,” he explained. Lashley described watching AEW matches backstage and being blown away by the risks and storytelling, saying, “I’m witnessing something completely different.”
He highlighted the fact that in AEW, wrestlers aren’t focused on contracts or ego. They’re focused on building something special—for the fans, for each other, and for the future of wrestling.
Lashley’s Respect for AEW’s Mission
