The WWE in-ring career of AJ Styles has officially come to a close following his emotional final match at the 2026 Royal Rumble. But while “The Phenomenal One” may be done competing between the ropes, Paul “Triple H” Levesque believes his legacy in WWE is far from over.
AJ Styles Retires from WWE After Loss to Gunther
At the Royal Rumble in Saudi Arabia, AJ Styles took on Gunther in a match that carried the ultimate stipulation—retirement upon loss. Despite landing signature moves like the Phenomenal Forearm and Styles Clash, Gunther made Styles tap out, sealing the end of an iconic WWE chapter.
It was widely known that AJ was approaching the end of his career, but fans had hoped for a farewell tour that lasted through WrestleMania 42. Instead, his final match came in January, marking the close of a run that included world championships, show-stealing matches, and a reputation as one of the most respected performers of his generation.
Triple H Hints at AJ Styles’ Next Role in WWE
In the Royal Rumble post-show, WWE Chief Content Officer Triple H confirmed that Styles himself made the decision to step away from in-ring competition, and it wasn’t taken lightly.
“He made it very clear that he was just done with the in-ring. There’s a point in your career where you say, ‘I don’t want to do this anymore.’ I think he was there,” said Levesque.
But stepping away from wrestling doesn’t mean leaving the industry. In fact, Triple H sees a new chapter for Styles—one backstage, shaping the future of WWE.
“I’m hoping that he will contribute… he’s one of the most influential people in the business and one of the greatest minds in the business.”
Could AJ Styles Be the Next Shawn Michaels?
Levesque compared AJ’s potential new role to that of his longtime friend Shawn Michaels, who has become a guiding force behind NXT’s success as a mentor and creative leader. Like Michaels, Styles has a wealth of experience and a calm, respected presence—traits perfect for coaching and producing.
“I think that’s a path and a career for AJ Styles,” Levesque added, hinting at a long-term position backstage.
A Legend Who Inspires a Generation
Beyond his accolades and championships, AJ Styles is known for something far more rare in pro wrestling—universal respect. According to Triple H, that’s what truly makes him great.
“There are very few people that are universally loved, that are universally respected… It’s a testament to the human being that he is,” he said.
Triple H believes that in the years to come, many young wrestlers will credit AJ Styles as their inspiration, just like a previous generation looked up to Shawn Michaels, Eddie Guerrero, and The Rock.
AEW Teases Stir Speculation
Despite Styles’ clear words about stepping away, speculation continues. Will Ospreay and Mercedes Moné both dropped subtle hints on social media, fuelling AEW rumours. However, Triple H seemed confident in AJ’s desire to end his wrestling story on his own terms, before injury or company direction forced him out.
Interestingly, AJ did not leave his gloves in the ring—a traditional wrestling gesture signalling retirement. That move left fans debating whether this truly is the end, or if there’s still one more match down the road in another promotion.
